The more relatives who have been ill (either on the father&#8217;s or mother&#8217;s side) with this form of cancer, the greater the risk. If relatives became ill at a young age, it is an indication of an inherited form of the disease. However, most cases of breast cancer are not inherited (that is, they do not pass from generation to generation).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-10\"><p>Specific genes known as BRCA1 and BRCA2 may increase the risk of developing both breast and ovarian cancer. A third gene, TP53, also appears to be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. A blood test can help detect any mutation of these genes. However, this genetic test is not suitable for everyone. This should be preceded by a consultation period that will help the woman who takes the test manage her results. Their &#8220;production&#8221; in the female body decreases during menopause. Prolonged exposure of women to these hormones increases the risk of developing breast cancer.<br \/>\nMore specifically:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul style=\"--awb-size:16px;--awb-iconcolor:#8a83ad;--awb-line-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-width:27.2px;--awb-icon-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-margin:11.2px;--awb-content-margin:38.4px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-1 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\"><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-caret-right fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p>Women who started menstruating before the age of 11 to 12 or who went through menopause after the age of 55 have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The reason is that breast cells have been exposed to estrogen and progesterone for a long time.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-no\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-caret-right fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">\n<p>Women who become pregnant with their first child after the age of 35 or who have never completed their pregnancy have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Pregnancy has a protective effect against breast cancer as it pushes breast cells into the final stage of maturation. In addition, it seems that breastfeeding also has a protective effect against the development of the disease.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-374a6bf42f4182106 fusion-toggle-has-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_374a6bf42f4182106\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"374a6bf42f4182106\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion-2785-1\" data-target=\"#374a6bf42f4182106\" href=\"#374a6bf42f4182106\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">Hormone replacement therapy<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"374a6bf42f4182106\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_374a6bf42f4182106\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-13\"><p>Recent use (within the last five years) and long-term use (over a number of years) of postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
